How to Set Up Google Alerts
QUESTIONS THAT APPLY TO THIS TOPIC
- How can I get google to alert me on topics that I am interested in?
ANSWER
- Go to http://www.google.com/alerts
- Enter in a search query by typing in one or more keywords. Examples of keywords include your name, your business name, or your title, i.e. financial advisor, financial planner, etc. If you are looking for money in motion, examples of search queries include “hired,” “promoted,” “laid off,” and so on. You can enter in multiple keywords by typing in the first keyword, then the + sign, then second keyword. For example, “retired+doctor+Toronto”.
If you are looking for news related to a client’s interests or hobbies, you might do something like “golf+tournament+Salt Lake City”.
- Choose how often you want results to be delivered to you. We recommend choosing “As-it-happens” so that you can know immediately if there are ever any alerts that meet your criteria. However, if you find that you start getting too many alerts, you can change it to “Choose Once Per Day.”
- Select what kind of results you want to receive. Select which sources you want the alerts to come from (“News” is a good option) as well as the region. (Generally, this would be your own country.) Next, we recommend choosing “Only the best results”. Choosing “Everything” will likely result in alerts that are not helpful to you, because Google will be far more liberal with its search than you probably intended.
- Enter in the e-mail you want the alerts to be delivered to.
