Gorilla Won't Open after Avast Update

Gorilla Won't Open after Avast Update

PROBLEM

  • When opening Gorilla, the mouse cursor changes to either a Pinwheel, or a Pointer/Pinwheel combo and Gorilla never opens.

CAUSE

Avast released an update (week of 12/1/2015) that causes Gorilla to freeze while opening, and could possibly lock up the Windows Explorer Shell.

SOLUTION

If the cursor is stuck because you’ve already tried opening Gorilla, the Windows Explorer Shell (explorer.exe) needs to be shut down/restarted.

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL then select Task Manager.
  2. On the Task Manager window select the Processes Tab, highlight explorer.exe then click “End Process.”
    • NOTE: With Windows 8 and greater, this button reads as “Restart,” and you can skip the next step.
  3. After you end the Shell, click File->New Task->Type “explorer” in the box and click “OK.”
  4. Before trying to open Gorilla, find the Avast icon in the bottom right area of your Taskbar, do a right click and choose “Open Avast User Interface.”
  5. Click “Settings,” scroll down and select “Exclusions,” click the Browse button and navigate to “C:\Program Files (x86)\,” check the box next to “Bill Good Marketing,” then click “OK.” This will tell Avast that everything running from inside the “Bill Good Marketing” folder is OK to run, and ignore file scanning.
  6. Click “OK” on the Avast Settings window then close the Avast User Interface.

You can now open Gorilla without any issue.
