How to Fix Issues Associated with Windows 10

QUESTIONS THAT APPLY TO THIS TOPIC

  • I just upgraded my computer to Windows 10 and now we keep getting the error “There was a problem opening the Gorilla Database, do you wish to open a different database?”
  • I just got a new computer with Windows 10 on it, and now I am getting the error “Automation Error ‘Object Reference not set to an instance of an Object.’”

ANSWER

The first issue occurs because the systems can drop idle connections after a specified time-out period (by default, 15 minutes) to prevent wasting server resources on unused sessions. The connection can be re-established very quickly, if required. If you are working in Gorilla when the time-out occurs, it can cause corruption in the database. Because you are actively working in Gorilla, the connection is then re-established so you may not even notice a problem until you log out of Gorilla and then try to go back in.

To fix this issue, you will need to run a command on your computer.

  1. Click on Start>All Programs>Windows System
  2. Right click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator.
  3. If you are prompted to click Continue to run the application, click Continue.
  4. In the Command Prompt screen, type in the following and then press enter: net config server /autodisconnect:-1

  5. You will then get a message that says “this command was completed successfully”. At this point you can exit out of the Command Prompt.

Please note: If your database has not yet been fixed, contact Software Support at 801-553-9888 so that we can assist in getting the error corrected.

The second issue is caused by another default setup within Windows 10. Gorilla requires the use of .NET Framework 3.5, however, Windows 10 is defaulted not to use that. This can easily be corrected by going through the following steps:

  1. Click on Start>Control Panel
  2. click on Programs and Features.
  3. On the left side of the screen, click on Turn Windows features on and off.

Once that window opens, it will look similar to this:

  4. Click the box for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)
  5. Click OK.
    • Your computer will go through a Windows File Download process which will automatically reboot your computer. Just click Next or OK to continue when prompted.

Once your computer comes back up, open Gorilla and you should no longer see any errors.
