PROBLEM
- Automation Error or Runtime Error 3251.
CAUSE
The “automation error” and the “runtime error 3251” both refer to the same problem: A corrupt installation of Microsoft Office or one or more of its components.
SOLUTION
To remedy this problem, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office
- Locate your MS-Office installation discs, or your product key. Do not continue with the uninstall procedure until you locate those discs or product key, otherwise you will not be able to run any MS-Office application.
- Note: If you use Office365, it should be able to register with your Microsoft Login information.
Windows 10 Instructions
- Click on the Cortana icon and search for Control Panel, then choose "Control Panel" from the list of results.
- Click on Programs and Features in the window that opens.
- After a moment, the list of installed programs will appear.
- Highlight the listing for “Microsoft Office” (the exact wording will vary depending on your version of Office).
- Click the “Uninstall” button and follow the steps for removing your Microsoft Office installation.
- Reinstall Microsoft Office from the installation discs or from Microsoft's website. Be sure to have your product key ready, as you will need it to activate the software.
